Eerie image found on Gable Tostee's phone disturbed investigators, but kept from trial

Several months before Warriena Wright fell to her death from the 14th floor of a Gold Coast apartment, the man accused of her murder created an image that would disturb police investigating the crime.

Gable Tostee had a mock up on his phone showing a chalk outline of a body at the base of his apartment building.

The sketch was similar to the kind out outlines which feature in murder scenes in American crime fiction stories.

While eerily prescient, this fact was not included in the brief of evidence as it was considered irrelevant and probably created in jest.

When Tostee met Ms Wright in central Surfers Paradise in August 2014, the 26-year-old New Zealand tourist knew almost nothing about the man she met through Tinder.

In part of a recording Tostee made that night that lasted three and a half hours, the formerly accused said, "Apparently I've got an IQ of 150... I just don't use it."

Tostee would often record encounters, sometimes with the many women he boasted of picking up on Surfers' Glitter Strip.

It was a peculiar practice for a man who had long struggled socially.

Ten years ago a judge quoted a psychology report referring to his Asperger's, saying he was partially disabled, socially distant and emotionally estranged.

He was said to be disadvantaged and at risk in the community, isolated from emotion and unable to make judgements about people he interacted with socially.

The psychological diagnosis came amid a string of former brushes with the law, which can now be revealed following the conclusion of the trial.

The former Somerset College student was charged in 2006 over a racket where he sold fake IDs to Schoolies.

In 2014 he was arrested for public nuisance after a drunken confrontation with police.

And just a month before Ms Wright's death he led police on a cross-border high-speed pursuit.

He only stopped after police deployed road spikes. He was jailed for 10 months.

On that occasion he wrote to police, apologising and saying it was the wake-up call he needed. He also accepted he had a problem with binge drinking.

Nowhere did he mention the drinking session where a woman plunged to her death from his balcony.

Tostee's obsessive recording continued that night as he phoned his father.

Then a web of security cameras captured his movements as he left the apartment in different shorts, when he wandered back into Surfers Paradise for pizza – even as his apartment building became a crime scene.

Tostee walked from his trial stony faced and shaking.

Once again surrounded by cameras and the recording devices, but he was free of both the murder and manslaughter charges he faced over Ms Wright's death.
