A US policeman could spend six months in jail after he was allegedly caught diving “super drunk”, Fox 17 reports.

Dennis Smith was driving off-duty when he was pulled over by Michigan police in the early hours of Friday morning.

The 42-year-old, who works at a Muskegon jail, blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.22, three times more than the legal limit.

It classifies him as having been "super drunk" according to Michigan law.

If found guilty Smith faces up to six months jail time and could be fined $700.

A spokesman for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the matter was being internally investigated.

Smith has been granted bail, with his arraignment expected on May 13.
