Karratha firies celebrate 40 years

The Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service commemorated 40 years of service to the Karratha community on Saturday.

The brigade began in 1973, with just five members operating out of a shed and getting around town in a single ute.

Forty years later, they have a full complement of over 45 members and five fire fighting vehicles.

Karratha volunteer FRS Captain Mark Ellison said it was important night for his brigade and he was glad the night ran smoothly.

“It came off really well. We had a great night and everyone thought it was just excellent,” he said.

Three members received official service awards, presented to them for their length of service.

Bryn Paplia and Belle McCraig were awarded their five year medals, and Bill Scott was honoured with a medal to thank him for 10 years of service.

Department of Fire and Emergency Service Superintendent Rob Cox attended the special evening and presenting the brigade with a 40-year service plaque to be displayed at their headquarters.

Mr Ellison said he was most thankful for the community, the members and their families.

“I want to thank the wider community for all their support and for continuing to get behind us. Thank you to the members and to their families,” he said.
