Hit-and-run death

The victim of a hit-and-run accident in the Goldfields has died in hospital, leaving the driver of the vehicle facing the prospect of upgraded criminal charges.

Hans Nieber, 63, was hit by a Holden Commodore wagon while walking along the Goldfields Highway, at the intersection of Williamstown Road, at about 7.25pm on September 14.

At the time he was walking to his home in Williamstown with his wife, an eyewitness to the hit-and-run, after both had spent the evening in the Kalgoorlie CBD.

Mr Nieber was flown to Perth after the accident and was in a critical condition in Royal Perth Hospital, where he died on Monday morning.

The driver of the vehicle, Darren Patrick Polak, 18, has already pleaded guilty to five offences.

They include dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident and wilfully destroying evidence.

It is understood Polak will be brought back to court to face an upgraded charge over Mr Nieber’s death.
