24-year-old prisoner beaten to death in Silverwater prison

A 24-year-old inmate has allegedly been murdered while being held on remand at a maximum security jail in Sydney's west.

NSW Police on Thursday evening said they'd charged a 28-year-old man with murder after the younger man's body was found by Corrective Services staff at Silverwater's Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre about 6.30am.

"A section of the centre was sealed off as the crime scene was analysed by forensics experts and statements sought by investigators," a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The 28-year-old is due to front Burwood Local Court on Friday.

Corrective Services extended its sympathies to the family and friends of the 24-year-old victim, who was being held on remand.

"Every aspect of the incident, including management and placement of the inmates involved, response times and action, will be thoroughly reviewed," a spokeswoman said in a statement.

She added that, like all deaths in custody, Thursday's incident would be subject to a coronial inquest.

Seven News reported the alleged murderer had previously been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a cellmate at Sydney's Parklea prison in April.

"There's no indication as far as we're aware, in these initial phases of the investigation, that this was about to occur," Corrective Services Assistant Commissioner Kevin Corcoran told Seven News.
