WARNING – CONFRONTING IMAGES: A man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after he allegedly shot his pregnant wife in the head, killing her and their unborn child.
The incident took place in Prattville, a city located in the US state of Alabama, early on Monday morning (local time).
Police arrived at a home on Sunset Court just after midnight after receiving reports of someone being shot, according to local media outlet WSFA News.
The woman who has been named by local media outlet WLBT news as Summer Knight Tatum, 26, was reportedly a registered radiologic technologist and qualified to use medical imaging technology.
She was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries.
Ms Knight Tatum was five months pregnant at the time and her baby boy did not survive either.
Doctors attempted to save the infant, but after a successful emergency delivery, he later died in intensive care.
The woman's family have confirmed to WLBT the baby was named Everett.
A fundraiser has been set up to help pay for Ms Knight Tatum and baby Everett's funeral expenses.
At the time of writing, it had raised just over US$10,000.
Family members who created the fundraiser said the 26-year-old was excited about becoming a mum.
"Summer was loved by so many friends and family, especially her nieces and nephews. Summer always had a huge smile on her face and loved life," the GoFundMe said.
"She was so excited about becoming a mother and it was just a mere 4 months away. Her family and friends will definitely miss her and what could have been."
Ms Knight Tatum's husband, 25-year-old Hunter James Tatum, has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
A motive has not yet been provided for the crime and the police are investigating the incident.
