Man dies in hit-and-run moments after leaving hotel

An elderly man has died after a hit-and-run accident outside of a hotel in central Queensland.

The 76-year-old man was struck by a car at 8.20pm on Saturday as he went to cross the road after leaving a hotel on Archer Street in Rockhampton.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, driving off in an easterly direction along Archer Street towards George Street.

Police say the car was later abandoned on Port Curtis Road just before 11am on Sunday.

Investigators are appealing for the driver or anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward.
