Officer's heartwarming act to help homeless man land job interview at McDonald's

Video of a police officer performing a kind-hearted gesture for a homeless man has gone viral.

Footage of a Florida policeman helping the man shave his beard so he could apply for a job at McDonald’s was captured on camera and sent into the Tallahassee Police Department.

The witness had gone into a gas station and encountered a police officer who had been at the McDonald’s next door when a homeless man had walked in and asked for a job.

“He was told they wouldn’t hire him unless he shaved his beard,” the witness’s mother, Kelly Duvall, told CBS News.

“So the officer went and got some clippers and shaved the man’s beard so he could go back and get a job.”

Since being shared on the Police Department’s Facebook page, the video has been viewed more than 24,000 times.

After the homeless man, known only as Phil, had tidied himself up, he went back into the fast food store and lodged an official application.

“We are always looking to hire those who go the extra mile at my restaurants and this gentleman has proven himself willing to do just that,” the McDonald’s owner-operator Raphael Vazquez told CBS News.

“We look forward to having him come in to complete the application process and sit for an interview.”

On Thursday, Officer Carlson posted an update on Phil to the Tallahassee Police Department Facebook page.

“I was going to dinner with the family and my kids pointed out Phil (and his friend Lonnie) sitting under the flyover on Thomasville Rd,” he wrote.

“After dinner we decided to pick up a few cheeseburgers from McDonald’s and stop by to talk with Phil.

“He then told me he had talked to the manager at McDonald’s and he was set to get a job but he still needed to get his ID/SS [identity] card.

“I then told Phil I had good news about that and told him I had been contacted by Senator Marco Rubio’s office here in town.

“They stated they had also seen the story and wanted to help Phil get his ID and Social Security card … They also said Phil could come by their office and they would help him with the process.

“Phil was super excited and assured me he would be ready for Thursday.

“Fingers crossed and hopefully we will have another update maybe on Friday.”
