Woman's cunning scheme to offload demerit points

A Perth woman has posted an ad offering money for someone to take her demerit points.

Posted on Facebook marketplace, the ad offers $100 for each demerit point.

“$300 cash in hand,” she wrote.

“$100 a demerit point.

“Only have one point left, need someone to take three points for me so I don’t lose my licence.”

A Western Australia Police spokesman told Yahoo News Australia the woman’s post isn’t illegal but the exchange of demerit points is.

“The penalties vary depending on the nature of the offences,” he said.

“As soon as someone engages in the exchange, that’s an offence and penalties vary based on the nature of her driving offences.”

In this particular case, the spokesman said it is hard to tell what the penalties for both parties, being the buyer and seller, could be given the woman didn’t state what her demerit points were for.

But at this stage she “hasn’t broken the law yet”.
