Paraplegic man's devastating injuries during daily coffee run

WARNING – GRAPHIC IMAGES: For one paraplegic man in Sydney, not being able to walk is only half of the battle.

Scott Hoare, who became wheelchair-bound in 2016 when he dived into shallow water at Coogee beach, has taken to his popular Facebook page to reveal a devastating setback on his long road of rehabilitation.

“I’ve said it plenty of times in the past, but if the worst part of a spinal-cord injury was not being able to walk, I’d probably be able to deal with that just fine,” he said.

Mr Hoare shared graphic photos of a large wound he’d suffered on his thigh after he spilt a cup of boiling coffee over himself but because of his condition, he was unable to feel the pain and was unable to determine the severity of his injuries.

With his insulated coffee cup placed between his legs, unwitting to him, the coffee spilt out as he wheeled home.

“I couldn’t feel it, so didn’t know for about 12 hours until I got into bed,” he recalled.

“After we found it we went to emergency and a few days after that, when the severity was obvious, I was admitted straight into the severe burns unit for a skin graft.”

Mr Hoare revealed the incident came at the worst time as he was in preparation for his university exams.

“Up until this latest little fiasco, everything was going so well!” he said.

Mr Hoare has made remarkable progress in his recovery since the accident nearly two and a half years ago.

His grit and determination has seen him spend considerable time in the gym, where he has slowly improved movement in his arms and hands.

“I’ve been smashing it in the gym with my strength work and am hoping to permanently do away with the hoist to get in and out of bed within the next few months.”

Mr Hoare highlights the amazing support he’s had, most notably from his loving wife, Amy, who has been by his side throughout.

Amy proposed to him just two days after he was taken off life support at Prince of Wales Hospital.

The following summer, the pair wed at Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club in front of friends and family.
