"One of the most powerful videos I have ever seen”: The detergent ad that has gone viral
It has been shared by Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and now it is viral: the powerful Ariel India ad that shows the damage caused by gender stereotypes.
The ad shows a mother arriving home from work, still fielding calls from the office, and diving straight into household chores while everyone else relaxes.
She puts bags of shopping on the bench, makes her husband – who is sitting on the sofa watching television – a cup of tea, gets started on cooking the dinner, puts on a wash, and puts away children’s toys
She asks her son about his homework. She sets the table.
All the while, her father sits observing her, his thoughts narrating the piece.
“You used to play house… And now you manage your own house, and your office” he says.
"I am so Proud. And I am so sorry, sorry that you have to do this all alone.”
The father laments that he never told his daughter it was not her job to do alone, but her husband’s also.
“But how could I have said it when I never helped your mum either, and what you saw, you learnt,” he says.
Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, posted the video to her page saying: “This is one of the most powerful videos I have ever seen”.
She said it showed how “stereotypes hurt all of us and are passed from generation to generation.”
“When little girls and boys play house they model their parents' behavior; this doesn’t just impact their childhood games, it shapes their long-term dreams,” Sandberg wrote.
“Why is laundry only a mother’s job?” the ad questions at its end.
“Dads #ShareTheLoad,” it says.
