Husted will take over for Vance, who was elected to the Senate in 2022 but selected to be Donald Trump’s vice president last year. The appointment runs through 2026, when a special election will be held for the final two years of Vance’s term.
DeWine told Bloomberg Television in an interview on Thursday that entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was among the people he spoke to about the appointment. Ramaswamy had taken himself out of consideration after Trump announced that billionaire Elon Musk and Ramaswamy would run a new Department of Government Efficiency to help dismantle bureaucracy, reduce spending, cut regulations and restructure federal agencies.
The Ohio governor said he spoke with Trump about the appointment and wanted to select someone who can represent Ohio well and also hold onto the seat in 2026 and 2028.
Husted, 57, who had been gearing up to run for Ohio governor in 2026 to replace the term-limited DeWine, will represent the state alongside car dealer and blockchain entrepreneur Bernie Moreno. Moreno entered the Senate just this month after defeating Democratic Senate Banking Chairman Sherrod Brown in November.
Husted was elected Ohio lieutenant governor with DeWine in 2018 and reelected in 2022, after serving for two terms as Ohio secretary of state. He also served in the state’s Senate and House, where he was speaker from 2005-2009.
Vance resigned from the Senate on Jan. 10 ahead of taking office with Trump on Monday.
