Odd sign on restaurant puts children on the menu

An odd sign spotted at a family restaurant chain in Western Australia has left some scratching their heads over the eatery’s questionable menu choice.

The advertisement plastered outside a Hog’s Breath steakhouse came with an interesting turn of phrase, giving its family promotion an entirely different meaning.

On Sunday, Reddit user thunderdownunder9 shared a picture taken outside a Hog’s Breath steakhouse. Accompanying the photo was the caption: “Now serving, at Hogs Breath Mandurah, human child.”

The photograph shows a billboard has been placed outside the family restaurant with the words, “We still eat kids for free!” written in big bold font.

“I thought they were just ‘Hogs’ these days?” one Redditor joked.

Another had a giggle at the sign, saying: “That has been there for years and I always have a laugh at it.”

“Economic downturn in Mandurah?” a third asked.

According to the Hog’s Breath website, a “Kids Eat Free” promotion exists at selected steakhouses, offering children a free meal with an accompanying adult meal over $20.

Hog Breath’s CEO Ross Worth confirmed to Yahoo7 News on Wednesday the billboard was “a tongue-in-cheek phrase” he said was coined more than 16 years ago, and was unique to the chain’s restaurants in WA.

“Obviously we don’t serve up children at Hog’s! We’re far better at our slow cooked Prime Rib Steak, plus it contains more meat,” he added.

“Not sure we would have made it to our 30th birthday this year with kids on the menu, but we do hope it gives passers-by a laugh.”

News of the unconventional sign comes after an Auckland Airport Coke vending machine apparently mixed English and Māori with a macabre meaning.
