7News exclusive: Dr Suresh Nair was 'unfit to practise medicine'

Dr Suresh Nair was considered 'unable to function as a consultant' according to medical colleagues, a 7News exclusive report can reveal.

Documents obtained by 7News show senior surgeons working with Dr Nair, as well as his supervisor, all opposed a decision by the NSW Medical Board to allow him to return to work after being suspended and sanctioned.

According to the report, Dr Nair was allowed to operate after being suspended by the board in December 2008.

7News obtained an interview with a patient of Dr Nair's who alleges she underwent botched surgery after that date and under his care.

"I'm on medication for depression and probably will be forever," says Debbie Burns, an alleged patient of Dr Nair who says she had an operation two years ago to fix a pinched spinal nerve.

"I have problems sitting for long periods of time. I have constant headaches, neck pain, I have limited use of my left arm." explains Burns.

According to the 7News report, those arguing against Dr Nair's return after suspension said that he had an "inability to function as a consultant", that Dr Nair's "clinical judgement is often confusing", that his "decisions regarding surgery are often bizarre".

Patients are said to be planning to sue the Sydney neurosurgeon.

Dr Suresh Nair is facing his sentencing hearing on Friday this week after he plead guilty to manslaughter of a woman and supplying drugs to another woman in 2010.

Both women were hired as highly paid escorts by the wealthy Dr Nair, and died due to cocaine overdose after an extended session of drug and alcohol abuse with Dr Nair, a court heard.
