Police search CCTV for clues of bushfire arsonist
Police are looking through security video in the hunt for a suspected arsonist who sparked a bushfire in Sydney’s southwest.
Following spot fires on Friday night, a woman who was near the train station at Casula on Saturday afternoon said she saw flames erupt.
“The area where we believe the fire commenced has been forensically examined,” Acting Superintendent Paul Albury told 7 News.
“We have taken a number of statements from people who called the police and fire services in regards to the fire."
Strike Force Carpi has now been set up to hunt the suspected firebug, with the Rural Fire Service echoing their concerns.
“It's absolutely sickening and its reprehensible - how dare anyone in society think they can deliberately light a fire,” Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.
The fire was downgraded from watch and act status to advice level on Monday morning.
It was feared the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights was in the fire path but was given the all clear on Monday afternoon.
In the wake of a tense and terrifying weekend, homeowners are hoping the worst has passed.
“They must be a very sick person to put so many lives in danger,” local resident Kathy Demetriou added.
