Boy shot in the face while playing with friend in regional NSW

A 12-year-old boy has survived being accidentally being shot in the face by a ricocheting bullet while playing with a friend in regional New South Wales.

It happened on a rural property near Young, just before 7pm Wednesday night.

Police say the boy and a friend were playing with a 22-calibre rifle, which discharged.

The round ricocheted and hit the boy in the face.

The boy was rushed to Young Hospital before being airlifted to Sydney's Westmead Hospital for specialist care.

He's in a stable condition as of Thursday morning.

Police are investigating but do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.
