Man trapped in NSW dam with his nose just above the water

A man had an amazing escape after he was trapped in a dam at a farm on the NSW north coast.

Daniel Miller was pinned under a 3.5-tonne excavator at his Charlotte Bay property near Forster for two hours on Tuesday, before a neighbour heard his cries for help.

The 45-year-old was trapped with his nose just above the water, after the excavator rolled into the dam.

The Rural Fire Service was forced to pump out water from the dam so Mr Miller could be released.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter air crewman Graham Nickisson told AAP Mr Miller had been crying out for help for two hours before a woman heard him and alerted emergency services.

Rescue crews say if it had of rained while Mr Miler was trapped, he could have drowned.

The 45-year-old was taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for treatment to "minor injuries", including a sore back and potential hypothermia.
