Sinkhole opens near PM's Sydney mansion

A four-metre deep sinkhole has opened up in a street near Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Sydney harbourside mansion.

NSW police media told 7 News Online that a pedestrian came across a collapsed footpath and noticed a strong smell of gas coming from the area.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Wentworth Street, Point Piper where a gas line and water pipe were ruptured by a collapsed footpath.

The sinkhole is thought to be quite close to the Prime Minister's personal home. Source: 7 News

Using a ladder truck as a platform, NSW Fire and Rescue lowered a firefighter into the sinkhole where he was able to clamp the leaking gas line.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the scene had been contained and handed over to local council.
