A NSW man's spring cleaning attempt ended in more than he bargained for on the way to the tip, when a spider frightened him so badly his car ended up in a lake.

The terrified man, from Lake Cathie near Port Macquarie, was startled to discover a huntsman crawling on him, which most likely came out of the junk pile, while driving on Tuesday, about 10am, the Port Macquarie News has reported.

He, who was alone in the car, panicked as he came around a bend in the road, and instead of hitting the brakes, he slammed down the accelerator pedal and his Toyota Prado went over the bank of the lake.

The impact with the water stopped the car and it soon began to sink.

The driver's door would not open, but luckily his window was three-quarters open, and he was able to crawl through to safety.

“I meant to hit the brake but instead I accidentally hit the accelerator,” he told the Port Macquarie News.

“I was surprised at how deep [the lake] was.”

He escaped with only minor injuries, aside from a dent to his ego.
