$4500 cab trip leads police to man accused of fleeing $45m drug bust

A $4500 cab ride from Sydney to Melbourne has led NSW police to a man accused of fleeing a $45 million drug bust at a traffic stop.

The routine police check resulted in the seizure of $45 million in drugs and cash three weeks ago.

A 28-year-old man has been flown back to Sydney from Melbourne, accused of being the fourth player in the drug ring.

He was charged on Friday with supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.

The man allegedly fled to Melbourne in a taxi the wake of the traffic stop, that led to the arrest three other men.

The $4500 cab fare, which was paid in cash, is being credited with helping police find the fourth man in Melbourne.

Police refused the man bail. He is expected to face court in Sydney on Saturday.

The saga began with a Haymarket (Sydney) traffic stop in July.

Police pulled over a driver for using his mobile phone, but a search of the car revealed three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

Three men were arrested, before police tracked down the other Chinese national who fled the state.
