'Superman' prisoner on the run after escaping NSW jail

A prisoner is on the run after escaping from a jail in far western NSW.

Nicholas Myles Bugmy, 27, broke free from a correctional centre in Broken Hill about 2pm on Sunday, police said. It's believed he fled on foot.

They describe Bugmy as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance and say he has a tattoo of the word "Superman" on the side of his neck.

Neither did they disclose the offences for which Bugmy was serving time or how he managed to escape.

"He needs to be captured as soon as possible," Barrier Local Area Command crime manager Mick Stoltenberg said.

"I would urge anybody with any information to contact their local police station.

"Also, it's a perfect opportunity to give a reminder that anyone who is found to assist Bugmy or any other escapee whilst at large will be committing a criminal offence."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
