Renewed calls for Salim Mehajer to resign as Auburn's deputy mayor

Auburn’s controversial deputy mayor is under renewed pressure to step down as police investigate new allegations against him.

Salim Mehajer is now accused of threatening the family of a Sydney siege survivor.

His colleagues, once again, say he has brought shame on their council.

Mr Mehajer was not answering the phone or the door of his Lidcombe home today. When he emerged he did not have time to talk either.

But he won’t be able to dodge questions from police.

He is now accused of threatening to kidnap a man’s children after he was asked to stop mishandling equipment at a Burwood gym.

The man happened to be the father of Sydney siege survivor Joel Herat.

“At this stage those that were involved have been the subject of some investigation” NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said.

Police spoke to Mr Mehajer today; not about the allegations but because he was not happy with the media covering them.

At least two of his council colleagues want the wealthy developer sacked.

“Enough was enough a long time ago,” councillor Irene Simms said.

“The continual antics of Cr Mehajer keep bringing the council into disrepute.”

Cr George Campbell said if Mr Mehajer should quit his role.

“If he has any sense of responsibility to the community at all he would resign,” Cr Campbell said.

Since 7 News broke the story of the latest allegations last night the only public statement the man behind ‘the wedding of the century’ has made was on Facebook where he posted a photo of himself.

It was accompanied by a quote reading: “God always gives His best to those who leave the choice with him.”

But his future as deputy mayor is in the hands of police.
