Worrying link between antibiotics and diabetes

A new study has found using antibiotics may increase people's risk of developing diabetes.

Researchers in Denmark scoured the medical histories of 1.5 million people and found those who used anti-biotics frequently were more likely to develop Type Two Diabetes.

While warnings about antibiotic resistance aren’t new, the findings have discovered its direct link with diabetes.

It found the disease is especially prominent in people who’d taken more than five courses of antibiotics over fifteen years.

"What it does highlight is that potentially taking too many antibiotics could be bad for you,” Professor Matt Cooper said.

Around 30 million prescriptions are written in Australia each year and while doctors say people shouldn’t be afraid to take antibiotics, they should exercise caution.

"Antibiotics are lifesaving medications my main message would be to talk to your doctor about the best treatment for your illness and if antibiotics are prescribed take them as directed,” Doctor Danielle McMullen said.
