David Beckham’s daughter-in-law is threatening legal action after her beloved chihuahua died suddenly after a trip to a New York dog groomer.

Nicola Peltz Beckham, 29, said her pet, Nala, was fit and healthy before the appointment, but came out struggling to breathe and was dead within hours.

She is now planning legal action, and posted on Instagram: "This has been the hardest month of my life.

"I can't even find the words to describe my heartbreak on so many levels. Nala was perfectly healthy when she went to the groomers yesterday but came out hyperventilating and couldn't catch her breath.

"We rushed her to the vet and she passed hours later.

"I'm sharing this in hopes that it might prevent this from happening to other dogs.

"Her life was taken away from her way too soon. She was my beautiful queen and stayed by my side for nine years through everything.

"Please be careful who you send your dogs to because you don't know what goes on behind closed doors.”

In a second post with images of Nala, Ms Peltz Beckham said she is “relentlessly investigating the situation to find out exactly what happened in that groomer's van”.

“I am doing everything I can to uncover the truth,” she added.

The US-born actress married Brooklyn Beckham, 25, in a lavish ceremony in April last year.

He also took to social media to post about the dog’s demise, writing that they “hope others don't experience a loss after something as simple as a grooming”.

"You were the cutest little baby girl and we will always think of you. We know you are looking and barking down on us”, he wrote.

"We love you so much and miss you beyond."

Showbusiness website TMZ reported that Nala was rushed to an emergency vet after the dog grooming appointment. She had fluid in her lungs, a rpaid heart rate, and neurological issues, it is said.

The dog groomer at the centre of the incident has not yet been identified.
