‘Quite the send off’: Newspaper goes viral for 'brutal' Trump front page
US president Donald Trump must be feeling increasingly lonely.
Joe Biden’s election win was made official by the electoral college electors on Monday (local time), prompting the Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell to acknowledge Joe Biden as president-elect for the first time on Tuesday.
Even Russian president Vladimir Putin has declared he is now ready to acknowledge Biden’s victory and work with him as the incoming president.
Trump, however, is still clinging to debunked conspiracy theories and fantasies of overturning the will of voters – and the New York tabloids aren’t pulling any punches.
A front page labelling Trump the “conspiracy-mad prez” has been shared online by amused social media users for its rather indelicate treatment of a sitting president.
“It’s over,” the headline reads. “Even if fat man won’t sing”.
“The New York Daily News is giving Donald Trump quite the send off,” noted Nick Bryant, the BBC’s New York correspondent and author of When America Stopped Being Great.
“Brutal. Yet well-deserved,” wrote anti-Trump political group Meidas Touch in response to the front page.
‘Time to move on’: GOP leaders finally speak up
Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Democrat Joe Biden as president-elect on Tuesday, saying the Electoral College “has spoken.”
The Republican leader’s statement, delivered in a speech on the Senate floor, ends weeks of silence over Trump’s defeat.
“I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden,” McConnell said.
“Many of us had hoped the presidential election would yield a different result,” he said. “But our system of government has the processes to determine who will be sworn in on January 20. The Electoral College has spoken.”
McConnell called Biden someone “who has devoted himself to public service for many years.”
He also congratulated Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, saying “all Americans can take pride that our nation has a female vice president-elect for the very first time.”
Biden told reporters that he called McConnell on Tuesday to thank him for the remarks.
Calls for Trump to end term with ‘modicum of grace’
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said now that McConnell has spoken, “enough is enough.”
Trump should “end his term with a modicum of grace and dignity.”
Slowly but surely in the wake of the Electoral College vote confirmation, GOP senators began speaking up.
“At some point you have to face the music,” said Republican senator John Thune of South Dakota, the second highest ranking GOP leader.
“Once the Electoral College settles the issue today, it’s time for everybody to move on.”
