New Year's opening hours 2020: When Woolworths, Coles and Aldi will trade

Now that Christmas is over, Aussies are preparing for the next big celebration – New Year’s Eve.

With people planning parties and gatherings, booze and food are again high on the shopping list.

However, many supermarkets and retail stores will be preparing to shut their doors early on New Year’s Eve while some will even keep them closed through New Year’s Day.

Yahoo News Australia has put together a state-by-state guide for when you can best buy your New Year’s barbecue and party supplies.

Coles opening hours

NSW:

All Coles stores across the state will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with the exception of Smithfield in Sydney’s west, which will close on New Year’s Day.

Victoria:

Most people in Victoria will not have to stress about Coles stores over the New Year’s period, with all trading on New Year’s Eve.

All will open again on New Year’s Day, with the exception of Little Knox, which will be closed.

Queensland:

Some Queenslanders will be able to do their shopping on New Year’s Eve up until 10pm at selected stores, while most will close at 9pm.

Selected stores will open from 7am to 9pm on New Year’s Day, however Goondiwindi, Mt Isa and Ayr will shut their doors for New Year’s Day.

South Australia:

All Adelaide metro stores will open until 9pm on New Year’s Eve, but regional stores may vary.

Adelaide metro stores will close on New Year’s Day, except for Adelaide CBD and Adelaide Rundle Place. Both will trade from 11am to 5pm.

Western Australia:

Perth metro stores will be open from 8am to 9pm on New Year’s Eve and 8am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.

The trading hours at regional stores however may vary so people should check their local store online.

Northern Territory:

Stores will open until 9pm on New Year’s Eve, with the exception of Kununurra and Tom Price, which will close at 8pm.

All stores, except for Tom Price, will open on New Year’s Day.

Tasmania:

All stores will be open across the state on New Year’s Eve and will reopen on New Year’s Day until 10pm.

Woolworths opening hours

NSW/ACT:

All Woolworths stores across NSW and the ACT will be open on New Year’s Day, but trading hours may differ so check your local store online.

Victoria:

Supermarkets in the state will all be open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Queensland:

All stores will be open on New Year’s Day, with the exception of a couple.

Weipa, Mission Beach, Mount Isa, Ayr, Bowen, Charters Towers, Proserpine, Blackwater, Childers, Pittsworth, Chinchilla, Kingaroy and Roma will all close, so make sure your fridge is stocked if you live in those areas.

Tasmania:

Supermarkets will open across the state on New Year’s Day with no store closures.

South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory:

With trading hours differing at a number of supermarkets in the territory and two states, people are urged to check their local store online for trading hours.

Aldi opening hours

NSW/ACT:

Shoppers can nab their usual Aldi bargains during the New Year’s period, however a small selection of stores will close for New Year’s Day.

All Aldi stores across NSW will open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The only store that will close on the public holiday is Liverpool Central.

Further, all stores will close at 7pm on New Year’s Eve and most will open until 7pm or 8pm on New Year’s Day.

Leichhardt however will shut at 4pm while Bankstown Central, Broadway, Hurstville, Lidcombe, Top Ryde, Wolli Creek and Wentworthville will open until 9pm.

Armidale, Ballina, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Casino, Toormina, Goonellabah, Tweed Heads South and Tweed Mall will close at 6pm.

In the ACT, all stores will shut at 7pm on New Year’s Eve and open on New Year’s Day.

Most stores will open until 8pm, except for Weston, Gungahlin, Casey, Belconnen and Amaroo, which still stay open until 9pm.

Victoria:

Stores across Victoria will stay open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve, with the exception of Mildura, which shuts at 6pm.

Supermarkets will reopen on New Year’s Day, except for Brimbank, which will be closed.

Most stores will open until 8pm on the public holiday, however Caroline Springs will shut at 5pm.

Trading hours at stores on New Year’s Day may differ.

Queensland:

All stores in Queensland will open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve and will trade from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.

Kingaroy however will be closed for New Year’s Day, but it will reopen on January 2 at 8am.

South Australia:

Supermarkets across South Australia will open until 6pm on New Year’s Eve, but unlike other states, most stores will close on New Year’s Day.

A small selection will however open from 11am to 5pm, including Victor Harbor, Port Pirie, Nuriootpa, Murray Bridge, Mt Gambier, Mt Barker, Kadina and Berri.

Western Australia:

Supermarkets will open from 8.30am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve, with most stores reopening from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.

No stores will close on the public holiday, however South Lake, Kalamunda, Camillo, Beechboro and Mandurah will close at 5pm.

Morley and Lakelands will shut their doors at 8pm while Beeliar will stay open until 7pm.

Westfield opening hours

NSW/ACT:

All Westfield centres in NSW and the ACT will operate within its normal hours on New Year’s Eve before all shopping malls close on New Year’s Day.

Victoria:

While shopping centres close on New Year’s Day in NSW, they will open across Victoria.

However keep in mind they will only be open from 10am to 5pm.

Queensland:

Westfield centres will too open in Queensland on New Year’s Day however there will be differing opening hours.

Westfield North Lakes, Garden City, Carindale and Chermside will be open from 10am to 5pm while Westfield Coomera and Helensvale will trade from 10am to 4pm.

South Australia:

All Westfield centres will close in South Australia on New Year’s Day.

Western Australia:

In WA, Westfield malls will open on New Year’s Day but only from 11am to 5pm.

Bottle shop opening hours

Both BWS and Dan Murphy’s will operate as normal on New Year’s Eve and all Dan Murphy’s stores will remain open on January 1.

Most BWS stores will also stay open on New Year’s Day, but a small selection will be closed.

Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and First Choice will be open on New Year’s Eve and most stores will stay open on New Year’s Day.

However people should check the relevant website for more details.

Big W opening hours

NSW/ACT:

All Big W stores across the state and territory will operate as normal on New Year’s Eve.

All stores will too open on New Year’s Day.

Victoria:

As is the case with NSW, all stores across Victoria will be open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Queensland:

All stores will open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with the exception of Kingaroy in Queensland’s South Burnett region, which will shut on the public holiday.

South Australia:

Five stores across the state will close on New Year’s Day after all operating as normal on New Year’s Eve.

Victor Harbor, Port Augusta, Renmark, Mount Gambier and Murray Bridge stores will be closed on the public holiday before reopening on January 2.

Western Australia:

In the western part of Australia shoppers can head to their local Big W store on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with all stores open.

Northern Territory and Tasmania:

All stores will open across the state and territory on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Bunnings opening hours

NSW:

Bunnings stores will open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, trading both days until 7pm.

Victoria:

Stores across Victoria will also open across the New Year’s period, including on the public holiday, until 7pm.

South Australia:

Bunnings will open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but will be closing early on the public holiday at 5pm.

Western Australia:

As is the same in Victoria and NSW, Bunnings in WA will open until 7pm on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Tasmania:

All stores will open in Tasmania on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with stores trading from 8am to 6pm.

Northern Territory:

Stores in Darwin and Palmerston will trade from 7am to 6pm on New Year’s Day while Bunnings in Alice Springs will open from 9am to 5pm.

IKEA opening hours

NSW/ACT:

Shoppers can still grab all their furniture needs over the New Year period with all IKEA stores remaining open.

The Canberra store will trade from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve and 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day.

Marsden Park will open from 10am to 5pm on New Year’s Eve and 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Day.

Trade will be a little later at the Richmond franchise, with the store open 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve and 10am to 9pm on New Year’s Day.

Tempe will trade the same hours as Richmond, while Rhodes will open 10am to 5pm on New Year’s Eve and 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Day.

Victoria:

Springvale is the only IKEA store in Victoria and it will be open on New Year’s Eve from 10am to 7pm and New Year’s Day from 10am to 9pm.

Queensland:

The North Lakes store in Queensland will be open from 9am to 6pm on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The opening hours will also be the same at the Logan store.

South Australia:

The only store in Adelaide will also be open both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, operating from 10am to 5pm.

Western Australia:

Those planning a trip to the Perth store can do so on either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day between 9am and 5pm.
