How new smart toilets could help save our lives

Everything from kettles to garden water hoses are now “smart” – but your toilet could soon be getting a rather alarming technology upgrade.

Toilet bowls could soon use artificial intelligence, or AI, to analyse your urine and stools, and give you an “early warning” if you’re ill, a CEO has said.

The idea might seem alarming, but companies such as Grohe already offer “smart toilets”, with app controls and auto-opening lids.

Adding AI is just the natural next step, one expert believes.

Sanjay Mehrotra of Micron Technology made the prediction at the Techonomy 2018 conference, saying: “Medicine is going toward precision medicine and precision health.”

“Imagine smart toilets in the future that will be analysing human waste in real time every day,” he envisaged.

“You don’t need to be going to visit a physician every six months.

“If any sign of disease starts showing up, you’ll be able to catch it much faster because of urine analysis and stool analysis.”
