'Pretty pathetic': Neighbour's snarky note sparks discussion online

An anonymous note from a new neighbour has left a bad taste in the mouth of a Sydney resident.

The note was ostensibly dropped off to a home in the inner-west suburb of St Peters, imploring the person, who just moved in, to keep the neighbourhood clean.

“Those of us who have lived here for many years take pride in our suburb,” it said. “Hope you will too.”

The author of the note claimed to have seen the person moving in items over their back fence and accused them of leaving a shopping trolley nearby.

“So can we ask that you take back the shopping trolley you left at your back fence on the grass,” the note said.

“Please be a good citizen. Regards, your St Peters neighbours.”

The written introduction, and the request contained within, seemed reasonable enough but the recipient apparently didn’t appreciate the suggestion.

Posting the note to the Sydney subreddit, they vented their annoyance at the anonymous letter and appeared to take offence at the suggestion of not being a good citizen.

“If you're going to accuse someone of being a ‘bad citizen’, be grown up enough to give me some contact details so I can explain to you that I didn't leave any shopping trolleys outside my house,” they wrote in the post.

“As much as I appreciate you thinking that I have the energy to walk 1km and back to buy groceries, then throw them over my back fence, despite having a car, this note is pretty pathetic.”

The post attracted nearly 50 comments, sparking debate about the legitimacy of the neighbourly request.

“I get that it’s a bit offensive to be falsely accused, but it’s a fairly minor (and polite) slight in the scheme of things,” one person wrote.

Others thought it was bad form from the stranger.

“The implication that the whole neighbourhood is behind this letter is disgustingly presumptive. Sounds like it's just one really pathetically sad and nosey neighbour,” another person commented.

“Can confirm this is not from the whole suburb,” said one person who claimed to live in St Peters.
