Dad, grandfather drown trying to rescue tot
The father and grandfather who drowned in a Surfers Paradise hotel pool while trying to save relatives who fell into the water have been identified.
Dharmvir Singh, 38, and his 65-year-old father Gurjinder Singh drowned in the pool at the Top of the Mark Holiday Apartments after Dharmvir’s two-year-old child slipped into the water at about 6.45pm on Sunday.
The toddler’s mother rushed to save her child but couldn’t swim, and the father and grandfather snapped into action.
While the mother and child were both able to return to safety, Dharmvir and Gurjinder both died in the rescue.
Emergency services arrived at the scene to find the pair unconscious at the rooftop pool.
Paramedics and an off-duty doctor performed CPR but neither man could be revived.
It is understood the family were on holiday from Victoria.
Mitchell Ware from Queensland Ambulance Service said it was an “extremely emotional scene”.
“Obviously, anyone could understand that not just to lose one family member but to lose two family members,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.
Multiple paramedics attended the scene on Sunday.
“Multiple paramedical responses attended reports of a double drowning in a pool at an address on Orchid Ave at 6.46pm on March 31,” Queensland Ambulance Services said.
“Two adult male patients, a male in his 60s and a male in his 30s were treated on scene in a critical condition.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
