A woman has been shamed on video making hateful comments about Muslims while waiting in line at a US supermarket.

American comedian Jeremy McLellan shared the recording on his Facebook page on Saturday, which he said was taken by a Muslim friend who wished to remain anonymous.

McLellan said his friend let the blonde woman in front of her in the queue at popular supermarket chain Trader Joe's, who only had a bag of avocados in her trolley.

She then begun making racist comments about another Muslim shopper's niqab and dress, before talking to the woman behind her about female genital mutilation, the comedian said.

That's when his friend covertly got her phone out and began recording the exchange.

The woman recording the conversation can be heard telling the blonde lady she shouldn't have let her in front of her.

"I wish they didn't let you in the country," she replies, before the Muslim woman tells her "I was born here."

The vitriol continues with the white woman saying "Obama's not in office anymore. We don't have a Muslim here anymore," and telling her the former US president was likely to end up in jail soon.

The horrified woman tells her, "You look a little crazy, maybe you need to get some help... normal people don't strike up conversations like that," to which the other shopper appears oblivious she has spoken out of line.

The Facebook video has already been viewed more than six million times.
