Murder charge after surfer attacked at home

A man has been charged with the murder of popular Sydney surfer Guy Haymes, who was found badly injured in his apartment earlier this year.

Police were called to Mr Haymes’ home in Manly, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, about 5.45pm on February 27.

The 59-year-old was found with serious head injuries and fighting for life. He died in hospital on March 15.

A strike force was established to investigate the circumstances of Mr Haymes’ alleged assault and his subsequent death, and police issued a fresh plea for information earlier this month along with his family.

A 41-year-old man was arrested about 7pm on June 15.

He was taken to Bankstown Police station and charged with murder, two counts of take/ detain a person with intent to obtain advantage and take/ detain a person with intent to obtain advantage occasion actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.

Mr Haymes, known to his mates as Creature, was well known in surfing communities from Wollongong to Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

He also had ties to communities in Sydney’s south including Hurstville.

Speaking earlier this month, his brother Mark Haymes said his family has been left in shock and without answers after the alleged attack.

“Guy was fun-loving and sociable, and he got along with everyone,” he said.

“Our whole family is shocked and in disbelief that he had his life cut short – and in such a brutal way.

“Not knowing what happened that day and not having the answers is the hardest part.

“It was tragic and we can’t imagine that anyone would want to hurt him.”
