MP's outfit prompts outpouring of abuse on social media

Online trolls have slammed a British Labour shadow minister for wearing an off-the-shoulder dress in the House of Commons, deeming the outfit “dreadful and inappropriate.”

Tracy Brabin, a former Coronation Street actress who was elected into parliament in 2016, was subjected to numerous abusive messages on Tuesday (local time) after a photo of her outfit went viral on Twitter.

The picture, which was taken during a debate about journalists being asked to leave a press briefing, was posted by a user who commented: “Is this really appropriate attire for parliament? #DressStandards.”

The posed question caused a stir online, with some people saying Ms Brabin, 58, should have been asked to leave.

“No it’s not and deserves reprimand!” one person responded.

“She looks like she’s been dragged through the hedge and back,” another said.

Numerous people also came to Ms Brabin’s defence, telling social media users to calm down.

“You’re misogyny is showing. Might want to tuck it back in,” one person directed at the original poster.

“It’s a shoulder, get over it,” another said.

‘I can confirm I’m not a slag’

Ms Brabin later responded to the Tweets.

“Hello, sorry I don’t have time to reply to all of you commenting on this but I can confirm I’m not a slag, hungover, a tart, about to breastfeed, a slapper, drunk, just been banged over a wheelie bin.

“Who knew people could get so emotional over a shoulder,” she wrote.

Fellow actor Gary Webster from Eastenders said Ms Brabin’s retort was “brilliant.”

“Omg if only they were as vocal about the behaviour, misogyny, racism, falling asleep and warped policies of the ruling govt as they are about revealing one shoulder. #Farcical #TheHandmaidsTale,” he said.
