MP’s son allegedly assaulted woman at party

A police officer, who is also the son of former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack has been charged over an alleged assault during a Christmas party at a popular Sydney nightclub.

Nicholas James McCormack, 26, was arrested about 1am Saturday following reports of an alleged assault on William St in Darlinghurst.

NCA NewsWire understands he was attending a Christmas party at a licensed premises when a scuffle broke out and spilled onto the street.

It is understood police will allege Mr McCormack got into a fight with a man, and assaulted a woman who tried to break up the scuffle.

Officers attended and took Mr McCormack, who is attached to a specialist command, to Kings Cross Police Station.

He was then charged with three counts of common assault and one count of common assault, domestic violence related.

Mr McCormack was granted conditional bail and will face Downing Centre Local Court on the charges on December 13.

However two Apprehended Violence Orders were mentioned in the same court on Wednesday, relating to a woman and a man.

The matter was adjourned to marry up with the charges in December.

The 26-year-old is the youngest son of former Nationals leader Michael McCormack, who was also deputy prime minister from 2018 to 2021.

The younger McCormack graduated from Goulburn Police Academy in 2020, with his graduation ceremony held at the Sydney Cricket Ground with his father and then-prime minister Scott Morrison in attendance.

A spokesperson from NSW Police said investigations into the matter are “continuing”.

“The officer’s employment status is currently under review,” the spokesperson said.

Michael McCormack, from Wagga, was elected to the House of Representatives for the Riverina region in 2010 in the Nationals party.

Before he ventured into politics, he was editor of the city’s newspaper The Daily Advertiser.
