A motorcyclist has been severely injured in a crash after trying to escape from police.

Just before 11pm on Sunday night, a police officer from the Lake Illawarra Police District tried to stop a motorcyclist on the Princes Highway near Shellharbour when the rider refused to stop.

Police intended on pursuing him but as the 34-year-old man sped away, the chase was abandoned due to how fast he was going.

The man was flown to hospital in a critical condition.

A short time later, police discovered the man had bulldozed into a median strip and severely injured his leg.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and flown to St George Hospital in a critical condition, while a crime scene has been established at the site of the crash.

The critical incident investigation team from Wollongong Police District have commenced an investigation into the incident and those findings will be subject to an independent review.
