Melbourne dad who suffered brain haemorrhage in Bali dies

A Melbourne dad who suffered a traumatic brain haemorrhage while on holiday with his wife and son in Bali has died just days after returning to Australia, his devastated family has revealed.
Rajiv “Raj” Jayarajah was in his Nusa Dua hotel room on June 30 when he suddenly suffered a seizure, collapsed and hit his head — resulting in the brain injury which required emergency surgery. His 10-year-old son Ari witnessed the medical emergency and quickly alerted hotel staff.
In a heartbreaking statement on GoFundMe on Sunday, the 43-year-old’s family confirmed the respected business consultant had tragically died from his injuries.
“After arriving back in Melbourne by air ambulance, the team at The Alfred Intensive Care Unit performed a number of tests on Raj and informed us that there was nothing that could be done to save him,” they said.
“Since then, Raj has been surrounded by his family and close friends in Melbourne who have gathered by his bedside to say goodbye.”
Family 'shattered' to lose dad 'so young'
His grieving wife Emma thanked “all of the incredible people who have cared for Raj since he collapsed in Bali”, including the hospital staff in Bali and Australian medical experts who advised them.
“We will always appreciate the care you gave Raj, and we know you did everything you could to try to save him,” the statement says. “We are shattered to lose Raj so young — it’s a huge loss for so many people who loved him, most of all his loving family. It is hard to imagine life without him, and we will now begin the mourning process.”
Mr Jayarajah’s family said they would provide further information about a celebration of his “incredible life” at a later date.

Insurer agrees to cover repatriation
Last Wednesday, family friend Andrew Macqueen — who was also holidaying in Bali at the time — said Mr Jayarajah’s travel insurer had agreed to reimburse his family the cost of his $200,000 repatriation to Australia.
“They will also be covering all of Raj’s Bali hospital expenses and other travel related costs,” he said.
