City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Ron Yuryevich says he would welcome any review that will help define the role of local government during emergencies such as bushfires.
A review of how local governments plan and respond to bushfires will be undertaken after the release of the Keelty report on the Perth Hills Bushfires.
“There are many grey areas of who’s responsible for what when it comes to bushfires and I welcome any review that will help define the role of local government, ” Mr Yuryevich said yesterday.
He said most of the land surrounding Kalgoorlie-Boulder was owned either by mining corporations or the Department of Environment and Conservation.
“The DEC is responsible for controlled burns and bushfire management around Kalgoorlie-Boulder, ” he said.
“Council is heavily involved in co-ordinating with the DEC and we also issue requests to clean up private property if we believe there is a fire risk involved."
