Mates driving motorised picnic table on wine tour stopped by police
A group of friends had to hitch a ride home after police seized the motorised picnic table that they took on a wine tour.
On Saturday, the four mates from New Zealand, took the custom-built picnic table on a winery tour in Perth’s Swan Valley.
“We just decided to take it out, it was a nice day for it. So we thought we’d just take it out to the Swan, just go see what wineries were going on,” 29-year-old Tim Alsop told Yahoo7.
“They’re all good blokes, we just sort of like going out on a nice, sunny day.”
The custom-built picnic table has a motorbike motor and is powered by Go Kart running gear, with a ‘number plate’ saying ‘CARE FACTOR 0%’.
“One of my mates built it a couple of years back,” Mr Alsop said.
“It was built by a Kiwi and we all are from NZ.”
Travelling in style, the group visited three wineries before police caught up to their vehicle as they were wrapping up their tour.
“When the Police caught up to us, we were just actually heading back towards Averley way,” Mr Alsop said.
Police seized the motor table on the spot and conducted blood alcohol tests on the men.
“I was taken back to the station for blowing over on the breatho machine, and the other boys got one of their partners to pick them up,” he said.
“But once I got back to the station, I blew clear.”
WA Police confirmed that Mr Alsop has received an infringement for the incident.
“Traffic Enforcement Group officers have spoken to a man who was in charge of a motorised picnic table that was stopped travelling on West Swan Road in West Swan around 5.10pm on Saturday, 11 August 2018,” a spokesman for the WA Police said.
“The 29 year old man who cooperated fully with police has received an infringement for a vehicle to be driven when unsafe. The penalty for this infringement is $100,”
