MasterChef viewers given chills by twin restaurant waiters

What did you miss?

MasterChef viewers were left feeling spooked by the twin waiters who appeared in the latest episode.

The four finalists – circus performer Chris, salad seller Abi, vet Brin and farmer Louise – were given the once in a lifetime chance to cook at the Roux brothers' Michelin-star Mayfair restaurant Le Gavroche, as part of the historic London restaurant's clothing celebrations.

But rather than being wowed by the food viewers were distracted by the striking twin waiters working at La Gavroche, serving the banquet to the VIP guests. They were compared to the twins in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror movie The Shining.

What, how and why?

Viewers were distracted by the identical twins who appeared on the show, working as waiters in the restaurant. Ursula and Silvia Perberschlager, known as ‘The Sisters’, joined Le Gavroche in 2001 and have worked there ever since. The bespectacled and identically suited twin waiters were described as "like a coiled spring" waiting to serve the food as soon as it came to the pass.

Several viewers drew comparisons with the twins in Kubrick's horror film The Shining. One wrote on social media platform X: "I love this arthouse reboot of The Shining #MasterChef #MasterChefUK."

Another said: "Those Twins are a bit freaky.#masterchef." One viewer shared: "The twin waiters is very The Shining. #MasterChef." And another agreed: "Freaky twins all grown up from The Shining #masterchef."

What else happened on MasterChef?

In the latest episode of the MasterChef series 20 final, airing on Tuesday 21 May, the finalists cooked a banquet for VIP guests including MasterChef: The Professionals judge Monica Galetti at Le Gavroche.

The contestants were shown how to prep their dishes by MasterChef: The Professionals judge Michel Roux Jr. The 63-year-old chef made the decision this year to close Le Gavroche, the French restaurant opened by his uncle Michel Roux Sr and father Albert Roux in 1967.

Abi was cooking a scallop mousse starter, Brin was given a pasta course of pumpkin and lamb ravioli to prepare, Chris was in charge of the main course of spiced roasted duck breast and Louise had a dessert of sable aux poire et myrtille with pears and blueberries. All the dishes were taken from Le Gavroche's menu throughout.

Among the guests at the banquet were MasterChef: The Professionals judge Monica Galetti. She revealed: "La Gavroche – my husband and I met here, as a young chef it's such a fountain of knowledge." Chef Galetti met French-born sommelier David Galetti when he was head-wine waiter at the restaurant and she was working in the kitchen. They have one daughter together.

As Abi poured sauce over her scallop mousse Roux Jr told her: "Be generous. One of my old man's favourite dishes and he absolutely loved it when it was drowned in sauce." Brin worried that his pasta was a little bit too al dente after serving it to the judges.

After sending out his duck main course Chris became emotional and embraced Roux Jr, saying: "Thank you so much. It's such an honour to be working in your kitchen."

Roux Jr told him: "That's alright, now tidy up chef- even Gordon Ramsay cleaned up behind him." The judges and hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace were wowed by the technique in Louise's dessert. Wallace said: "I personally would eat about a dozen of those. It's quite incredible."

The finalists all cooked a dish inspired by someone they love for hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace. Abi's menu was inspired by her mother, Chris was cooking for his partner Kim, Louise's dish was inspired y her husband and Brin's by his fiancee Anna.

Torode and Wallace were impressed by them all, but after a discussion about who was the weakest between Louise and Abi they decided to send 22-year-old Abi home.

Torode told her: "Abi thank you it's been an incredible journey for you."

Wallace added: "I would really like to see what happens to you next because you an amazing cook for someone so young."

Abi admitted: "Obviously a little bit gutting to be going home so close. I'm really proud of what I've achieved. One of the best experiences of my life. I'm just really grateful."

Chris, Brin and Louise got through to the final cook off to be named MasterChef 2024.
