Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Release date, trailers, and gameplay details
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 marks the return of the wisecracking web-slinger to PlayStation this autumn.
In the sequel to the smash-hit 2018 game, Peter Parker and Miles Morales will don a variety of enhanced suits to take down a rogues’ gallery of marauding villains, including the sinewy symbiote Venom.
Not only will players get to swing and parkour their way around an even bigger New York City, but they’ll even be able to glide using new web wings.
With just weeks to go till its launch, get ready to play with our guide to the blockbuster sequel.
When is Spider-Man 2 coming out?
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will land on October 20 on PlayStation 5.
Pre-ordering the game will grant you an extra suit for Peter and Miles, and a Web Grabber gadget.
How many Spider-Man 2 game editions are there?
You can also choose from three different editions of the sequel, two of which come with pre-order perks and extra goodies to boot.
Firstly, there’s the no-frills standard version of the game for £70. While the £80 deluxe edition throws in ten unique suits along with other items. Finally, Sony is hoping a 19-inch statue of Venom and a steelbook case will convince superfans to fork out £220 for the collector’s edition.
Is Spider-Man 2 a PlayStation exclusive?
At the time of writing, the new game appears to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for the foreseeable future.
Sony has said as much, and developer Insomniac Games claims it was “built from the ground up” for the PS5.
Then again, the original Spider-Man and its 2020 spinoff Miles Morales both landed on PC in 2022, so there may be hope yet for the sequel.
What’s new in Spider-Man 2?
For the first time, Spider-Man 2 will allow players to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to complete missions.
Their escapades typically involve thwarting an endless swarm of cartoonishly evil bad guys who always seem hell-bent on terrorising the good folk of NYC. This time, they’ll face off against Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, and Venom, among other antagonists. Despite the hazards of the job, the two superheroes never let a quippy one-liner go to waste.
Apart from instantly being able to switch between the two Spider-Men, the new instalment also offers a bunch of new features. Our fast-talking superheroes now boast new abilities: Peter has gooey symbiote powers and Miles has an electric charge pulsing through him.
As usual, you can level up by unlocking new skills, some of which will even be shared between the two heroes. The pair can also equip new gadgets to ensnare multiple enemies or sneak up on them.
Plus, there are a whopping 65 suits to unlock, including new looks and designs borrowed from the movies and comic books.
One of the most joyous parts of the original was traversal. Swinging around Manhattan was a blast, but now the game’s New York is almost two times bigger, with new areas including the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Thanks to Spidey’s new web wings, players can also choose to glide through the Big Apple.
As it’s not hampered by the last-gen PS4, Insomniac says the new game boasts a more detailed world, with richer lighting and immersive 3D audio.
