Man's photo of bread in the fridge sparks fierce debate

Tumultuous debate has ensued over whether to store bread in the fridge or freezer after a man shared a photo showing several loaves in the fridge at his workplace.

The Perth resident was particularly disturbed by the sight, so took to Facebook to gauge if he was alone in his strong opinion of excess bread belonging in the freezer.

Speaking with Yahoo News Australia, the man said he was “fair dinkum” confused at first and soon realised people had just as strong beliefs over cold bread as they did chocolate and tomato sauce.

“I normally buy the two for $8 loaves from Bakers Delight and freeze one for the end of the week,” he said.

“Talking to other people it’s turned into one of those debates like is sauce in the pantry or fridge after opening, chocolate out or in the fridge, and cutting the sandwich in rectangles or triangles.”

More than 100 people weighed in on the debate after he shared the photo of his discovery to a local community group, writing: “Seriously! Who puts bread in the fridge?”.

Many argued storing loaves in the fridge was perfectly normal, saying the method helped the bread stay fresher for longer.

“I do with bread to stop it going off in the summer and so the kids and the f***ing cats don’t touch it,” one person said.

“Our breads always in the fridge it stays fresher and lasts longer,” someone else agreed.

“In my experience bread lasts longer in the fridge no matter what anyone says,” a third person wrote.

One person even shared a photo of the commercial sized fridges at Coles with shelves of bread inside.

Several others however swore by keeping it in the freezer.

“I buy bread once a week, it goes in the freezer then I take it out as I need it! Done it for years,” someone wrote.

They weren’t alone, with one arguing “putting bread in the fridge accelerates the process of moulding”.

“Freeze bread. It can go straight in the toaster frozen and I make the kids sandwiches from frozen bread too. It’s thawed well before lunch time,” another added.
