Tragic reason man, woman were on tracks

A man and woman who were killed by a freight train in Sydney’s north reportedly had an argument just moments before the collision.

Police were called to Berowra Railway Station, in Sydney’s north, shortly after midnight on Friday following reports 25-year-old Aroulen Chinnian and a woman in her 30s had been struck by a train.

While paramedics, including intensive care paramedics, attempted to treat Mr Chinnian and the woman, they both died at the scene.

It is understood Mr Chinnian lived near the railway station.

ABC News reported the pair had gotten into a disagreement on the platform before the man threw an item, which belonged to the woman, onto the tracks.

It is understood the item was a mobile phone.

The woman then attempted to retrieve the item before Mr Chinnian reportedly saw the oncoming train and attempted to help the woman off the tracks.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the events leading up to the collision were still a “matter of investigation”.

“It appears some property of one of the persons became on the railway track (and) it appears that two people have entered the railway track and unfortunately a train approached at the time,” he said.

“A collision resulted.”

It’s understood police are still investigations the extent of their relationship and believe Friday morning’s events were a result of misadventure.
