Police are probing an early-morning Good Friday shooting after a fatally injured man was found on a suburban street in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to Justin Ave in the northern suburb of Glenroy, locating the man in the carpark of a small block of shops about 4.30am.

Despite efforts from paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene.

Speaking from the scene on Friday, Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police had responded after calls came through of a shot being heard.

A short time later police and paramedics arrived and located a male person next to a red Hyundai i30,” he said.

“This appears to be a targeted attack... we’re working on the belief he is known to police and does have a criminal history.”

Inspector Thomas said investigators understand the man had arrived at the location in the red i30 shortly before the shooting.

“Investigators are trying to determine the deceased’s movements, why he was here and where he was previously,” he said.

“I stress there’s absolutely nothing to link this to any of the tobacco incidents or any other shootings that has occured.”

Inspector Thomas said police were “working hard” to understand what happened but said the investigation was in an early stage.

He urged anyone who saw the Hyundai i30 or with any “trivial” information to call Crime Stoppers.

“We’re appealing for anyone that may have knowledge of what has occurred here this morning to share that with police,” he said.

An area surrounding the string of suburban shops was cordoned off as police combed over the scene on Friday morning.
