Update after man shot dead at cafe
A second man has been charged over the alleged murder of underworld figure Gavin Preston, who was fatally shot while eating at a cafe in broad daylight.
Victoria Police have applied to extradite Yagoona man Rabii Zahabe, 24, from NSW after charging him with the murder of Preston in September last year.
Police will allege Preston, known by the moniker ‘Capable’, had been eating brunch outside Sweet Lulu’s cafe in Keilor with Abbas Junior Maghnie, 26, when two men dressed in black approached and fired multiple shots.
Preston, 50, died at the scene while Maghnie was hit in the stomach.
Two cars believed to have been used as getaway vehicles were later found burnt out in Keilor and Keilor Downs.
NSW Police had previously arrested Mr Zahabe in the Sydney CBD in October last year on unrelated NSW matters.
He fronted Bathurst Local Court on Thursday where police successfully made an application to extradite him to Victoria.
In October, police also charged 22-year-old Jaeden Tito over Preston’s murder.
His matters remain before the court.
Preston, who was a long-term figure in Victoria’s gangland circles, had been released from prison in early 2023.
He had served his time for the 2012 “defensive homicide” shooting of drug trafficker Adam Khoury.
