Man 'planned to meet person on Grindr' shortly before body found

Homicide detectives are appealing for information regarding the ‘suspicious’ death of a man in NSW’s south.

The man, identified only as a 56-year-old man from Canberra, was believed to be using a popular dating app to meet another person before his body was discovered.

Emergency services were called to bushland near McNee Street in Broulee, on NSW’s south coast, following the discovery of the man’s body on February 2 around 4.50pm.

The man was found wearing a dark blue, sleeveless, fitted t-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

Strike Force Henrick, comprised of detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and South Coast Police District, have been tasked with investigating the murder.

As part of the investigation, police have released images of a Honda Jazz with ACT registration plates.

“We are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen or who may have dashcam footage of this car as it was driven between Canberra and Batemans Bay on Sunday,” Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said at a press conference.

Police believe the man made arrangements to meet up with someone he had connected with on dating app Grindr, and he travelled between Canberra to Bateman’s Bay on Sunday morning.

“Upon arriving in Batemans Bay, we believe this man may have been using the dating app, ‘Grindr’, to meet with another person before his body was found,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“This is a small community and we hope that someone may be able to assist our investigators – either through sightings of the car, or who also may have been using dating applications to meet people in the area.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online.
