Man Hides Engagement Ring for Fiancée in Treasure Chest During Escape Room Proposal: 'I Didn't Suspect a Thing'
Ubeiden Cifuentes Samboni surprised Amoy Mckenzie by popping the question when they reached the final challenge in their escape room experience
A British man found a clever way to pop the question to his girlfriend.
Ubeiden Cifuentes Samboni took his now-fiancée, Amoy Mckenzie, on a special date to an escape room in Salisbury, England, and hid her engagement ring inside a pirate treasure chest that was part of the final challenge of their experience, according to the Salisbury Journal.
Samboni, 33, told the outlet he wanted to do something "different than the traditional" proposal and surprise Mckenzie, 31 — and he certainly succeeded.
"I didn’t suspect a thing," Mckenzie told the outlet. "I had no idea that he was going to propose."
"When I saw the box in the treasure chest I was confused for a moment, wondering why there was a black box at the end," she continued. "But as soon as I saw the light from the box shining on the ring, I started to cry. I couldn’t believe that he was proposing."
Then, per the Journal, she looked around and saw Samoni on bended knee. "I was in complete shock, but so happy," she recalled, adding, "He did such an amazing job surprising me the way he did. I love my ring."

When it came to planning the proposal, Samboni had an assist from Live Escape Salisbury’s owner, Claire Pitcher. Prior to the couple's visit to the venue, he reached out to Pitcher to let her in on the secret.
"When the two of them arrived, I could hardly contain myself as we had it all planned out," she told the Journal. "[Samboni] managed to sneak me the ring while Amoy was distracted, and I put it in amongst the pirate treasure they would win when solving the final puzzle."
Per the outlet, Samboni set up a camera to film the couple's hourlong escape room experience — and Mckenzie's emotional reaction to his surprise marriage proposal.

The day was doubly special for the couple, as they planned the escape room date to celebrate the four-year anniversary of when they first met on a language app during the COVID lockdown. Mckenzie was learning Spanish, and Samboni was learning English.
"We traveled back and forth a lot to see each other once borders opened up, and the rest is history," he told the outlet of their romance.
Now, they are looking ahead to celebrating their wedding, though they have yet to set a date. "We’re not sure when the wedding will be as we’re enjoying our engagement right now," Samboni said, per the Journal. "We’re hoping to have the wedding in Colombia in the future."
