Man found dead in the middle of Sydney street

A man in his 20s has been found dead with head injuries in the middle of a street near Sydney’s inner west.

Police were called to the intersection of Hereford Street and Minogue Crescent at Forest Lodge around 12.40pm after a man’s body was found in the middle of the intersection.

The man was found around the corner from Forest Lodge Public School and the Broadway Violin School.

A witness called police just before 1pm saying the victim was staggering down the middle of the street, an officer at the scene told AAP.

Philippe, who’s lived at the intersection for more than seven years, said it was usually a very peaceful neighbourhood.

“I thought when I saw the helicopter it was a hit and run,” he told AAP.

Philippe said there was a stabbing nearby a few weeks ago but violence was rare.

A manhunt is now underway for two people.

Police said they were looking for a man and a woman.

Police stormed a nearby apartment about 2.30pm but didn’t appear to find anything.

Students at Forest Lodge Public School were at a sports carnival at the time of the shooting and arrangements have been made for them to be taken to Glebe Public School to be picked up, a NSW education department spokesman told AAP.

Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command would like to speak to anyone who might have been on Hereford or Minogue crescents around lunchtime and has any information that could assist with inquiries to contact them.
