A man is fighting for life and a second has been arrested after a serious crash in Melbourne.

Police have been told a white Holden Commodore station wagon collided with a blue VW ute on Main Road East about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

A 39-year-old Broadmeadows man who was a passenger in the Holden Commodore is in a critical condition in hospital.

The driver of the Commodore - also a 39-year-old Broadmeadows man- was arrested and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

The male driver of the ute was not injured.

The investigation remains ongoing.
