A man has been left fighting for life and a woman has been seriously injured after a stabbing attack, which police will allege in court had been planned “for some time”.

Emergency services were called to a home on Sydenham Rd, Marrickville just before 6pm on Thursday after reports of a stabbing near Marrickville High School.

Paramedics discovered a 25-year-old man with stab wounds to his face, neck, head and back, and a 55-year-old woman who had a stab wound to her throat.

Both were rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, with the woman now in a stable condition and the man still fighting for his life.

Police established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.

Detective Inspector Ben Kennis said a man arrested over the incident was the brother of the 25-year-old and the son of the 55-year-old woman.

“We will allege (the accused) had been planning this for some time,” Inspector Kennis told media on Friday.

“It was a quite confronting scene on Sydenham Rd in Marrickville.

“This is a very serious domestic violence related incident.

“We take this very, very seriously and a brief of evidence will be prepared for the court.”

Inspector Kennis said police are investigating if the man’s father, who was allegedly in the home at the time of the attack, was another intended target.

“The father was not in the room at the time and managed to run out the front of the premises and spoke to a witness, who alerted emergency services,” he said.

The 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station.

Police allege that all three individuals are known to each other.

He’s been charged with two counts of cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.

The man did not apply for bail at Newtown Local Court on Friday, and his case will return to court on July 18.
