Man 'confesses to killing British student over marriage rejection'

A 26-year-old man has allegedly confessed to the murder of a woman who turned down his marriage proposal, according to reports.

Zahid Jadoon, from Lahore in Pakistan, has been arrested after police said he admitted to the slaying of British-Pakistani woman Mayra Zulfiqar, 24, on May 3, Pakistani news network SAMAA reported.

A police officer told the publication Ms Zulfiqar was found dead in her Lahore home by a maid.

The 24-year-old had been visiting Pakistan for two months from England. She had been studying law in Middlesex while her parents lived in London.

Four men were named by the victim’s uncle as suspects. Saad Butt, 28, was named by The Sun as another suspect.

“They wanted to marry the victim and committed the crime when she refused,” an officer told SAMAA.

The officer added she had “multiple” bullet wounds and “torture” marks on her body.

Police Superintendent Shoaib Khurram Janbaz told The Sun the main suspect had confessed to murdering Ms Zulfiqar.

Photos from Jadoon’s social media accounts show him holding guns. In one photo he’s seen holding and loading a pistol. In another he’s wearing sunglasses while holding up an automatic rifle.

Murder accused from a wealthy Pakistani family

Jadoon is said to be from a wealthy Pakistani family.

Ms Zulfiqar had a large Instagram following with more than 11,000 followers.

A family source told Mail Online one man had been “harassing” Ms Zulfiqar.

“Perhaps it was because she's from the UK and is a very beautiful girl. It might have been a status thing for him,” the source told the publication.

The source did not name this person as Butt or Jadoon however they did claim a “local gangster” with connections to police had been harassing her.

But when they reported him, police did nothing, they said. They claim they reported the man three times.

Jadoon has been released on bail. It's not clear when he will face court.
