Man's ingenious DIY trap catches 'thousands' of mosquitos

A DIY mosquito trap is gaining attention online with a man claiming he has trapped thousands of mosquitoes in a night.

A video of the device by Dan Rojas on the GREENPOWERSCIENCE YouTube account has been viewed close to 600,000 times in the month since it has been uploaded.

The video caption states: "I trapped 8000 mosquitoes in two nights using our Mosquito trap and adding seltzer water CO2 as an off the shelf attractant.

"In the summer we clear our property of mosquitoes only to have the wind blow in new mosquitoes from surrounding areas."

It is reported that the mozzies are attracted to the carbon dioxide exhaled.

"He kinda acts as a mosquito attractant and he never gets bit. He never itches, nothing," Mr Rojas said.

He claims placing a bottle of seltzer water nearby works as well to bring in the mozzies, as they're attracted to the carbon dioxide.

"Open the top up lightly. Let the CO2 seep out. It runs for about three or four hours."

The Daily Mail reports that when the mosquitoes are trapped Mr Rojas sprays the animals down with diluted rubbing alcohol, which kills them and doesn't leave behind any poisonous residue.

Mr Rojas can be heard in the footage saying: "While using a bottle of seltzer water, rubbing alcohol and a fan covered with a screen will not cure the world's mosquito epidemic, it can make life less miserable."
